Tane's Surfing Story

Tane's Surfing Story

                     Surfing in Hawaii

“Tane Tane,” whispered Dad, ”Wake up."
I got up and got dressed. Soon Dad and I walked down to the beach. We peered through the mountain of surfboards and there it was. Soon Dad found his surfboard. I saw a big set coming.

After we saw the big set we paddled out. Suddenly a wave crashed hard on my head. It felt sore.

Unexpectedly I saw a wave. As I paddled, I noticed that someone had all ready caught the wave. But I kept on going with my eyes closed. Finally I felt the wave forcing me forward. I stood up in a hurry, and I was riding it for real.

RJ's Lighthouse Writing

The lighthouse was looming in the distance and the boat was tossing and turning. The waves were crashing into the lighthouse. It was getting thrown back and forwards. It was stormy. It was wild and rough. There were some shipwrecks along the coast. Seagulls screeched above them. Stones were hitting the windows. The water was dark. I saw kahawai  swimming beneath the surface. I felt cold and scared.

Writing from a different perspective

Writing from a different perspective.

We studied a model text titled "The Lost Property Box".

We discussed how the text was written from the perspective of a shirt.
We then had a try at writing our own paragraphs from the perspective of different objects.

We hope you enjoy our different views about our lives.

The Rubbish Bin

“Please help me, oh help me, I am down at the bottom of the poor rubbish bin.’’ I feel so sorry for all the other foods.

I just wish someone would put me back in the right bin, I mean, literally, come on.

I’m so bored just shoved in the corner along with chippy packets, yoghurt containers, and even things that look quite like..well me.Just blank white paper.

Be careful - if you put your rubbish in the rubbish bin, you never know... you might just fall in and you will end up like me.

Tote trays...
On the table tote trays sits rubbers and  pencils and more things sleeping in me and I’m feeling sleepy.

Put me in something to let me rest.

“ I have been there for like 1000 years and I’m with other tote trays.”

Please put some things in side of me and I will keep them safe for you.

Don't grab me don't grab me.
I'm in the P,E shed. I feel lost in here.
I wish someone would give me a friend, that would be better. Someone could bring     me to someone else.
I've been here for two weeks now. There are only popped and stinky other balls    around me.

If you come searching, be careful you don't get locked in.

Pod 7's "Playing Hard"  Writing

Earlier this term we were lucky to have the coaches from Northland Rugby come to school to give us some coaching on Rippa Rugby.

Following this, some students were able to attend a Rippa Rugby tournament day at Kensington Park, where they had a great time.

Following this we studied a model text, excerpts from "Beans" by Patricia Grace.
We wrote our own paragraphs with the following criteria:
I have:

  • written a paragraph about playing hard
  • not used the actual words "playing hard"
  • included actions that show I was really "going for it"
  • included a listing sentence
  • included how I feel about the experience (reflections)
We hope you enjoy our paragraphs

I couIdn’t wait to get on the turf. It was cold and foggy. It was time to go one the turf .
We were playing against Kamo primary. They were pretty challenging.

When we got on the turf, I was wing, the same as Hannah .  I ran up and passed the ball. But Sam got the ball. The other team  took  the ball and ran with it. But I ran behind them. Hannah got the ball and smashed it in the goal. I passed to Sam and  she scored  a goal.
I got subbed. I  hate being  sub. It takes all the fun away. I  couIdn’t wait to go back on the turf. I was goalie. I love being goalie. I’m the one who gets the  best runs. Sometimes I’m good at defence. I LOVE HOCKEY .

by Zoe

We played hard
As I was runing down the sideline, bang! I got a try.
Everyone was jumping on me.I  ran back. I ripped the tag off DJ. just before he got the try.
Shana ran down the field. She side stepped the boy who wanted to rip the tag. Cohen gave the ball to Shana.
She got two tries.
The game was over.
’’We won!’‘said Luke. “We! won! we! won!” We ran off the field like crazy.
We had won all of our games. Now we have to play Hika in half an hour.

by Casey

                       Playing hard

Here we go...the whistle blows. It feels good when that ball comes to me. I rip, step, run, pass, dummy, everything. I love it when I touch that  ball down on the grass. Look! I see a gap. I pass back and I call loudly.
I go for it, even when I get muddy because that makes me stronger. I chase the ball like cat and mouse. What I think I do.

By Tāne

I was at soccer in the wind and dodged the other players.
I fell over a few times but I got back up into the game and didn’t cry.
We lost but I was still happy because I got player of the day. And in the end, I was really working hard.

By Ella

I jump and dodge the ball. Two people left. Everyone goes for me. I run and jump but I get hit. I grab the ball. I sprint and throw. I just tagged them on the leg with the ball.
We restart.
I go in and my legs are kicking deadly. Two people out and two left, including me.
Someone hits me too, but someone else chases my other teammate and they get hit just before me.
I win, “Yay!”

by Dallas

I know that if I don't get included I'm not going to have a fun time.

I rip, step, squash the worms, sprint, and score a try. I get stuck into it all the time. I keep on going! No matter what -nothing will stop me from getting to the try line. My tag always gets ripped!

I've had a fun time.

Ashton

Playing Hard
While I was getting my tags on, I got nervous. My buddy said, “I can’t wait for your turn.” Just then I heard a voice saying my name so I went on.
I ripped, ran, tripped and had fun. The next game was at 11.30a.m. I got excited. Then the game began. This time I wasn’t a sub. I like it when I’m not a sub.

The last game was at 1.30.pm. When the game was going I got a bad stitch. But I tried, and I got through it.

By Isabella

I kicked the ball.
I ran as fast as I could. I was holding the ball but
someone ripped off my tag. I ran and ripped their tag
off. I ran to get the ball off the people on my team.
I got all muddy.
I cleaned myself before I went on the bus.
We went back to school.

Strike percussion Group Visit

Strike Percussion Group visit Hurupaki

We were lucky to have the Strike percussion group visit and demonstrate their skills.
Here are some of the opinions of Pod 7 students.

As the people were on the stage drumming, they followed the beat.
But I wonder how they remembered all of the drumming.
If I were them I would forget all of it.

Their nicknames were: Hannah Banana, Shy guy Tom and James Strike.

They have nearly been to every school in New Zealand. It was amazing how they could hold their sticks in their hands.
That was my favourite part in the show.

By Bailie

I loved that performance.
Hannah played the drums loud.
The teachers went on the stage.
They played the drums too.

DJ's Robot Story

The big robot is standing in front of me.
He has lightning shooting out of his stomach.
I feel scared because I think it is going to step on me.
It looks like he is going to shoot me with his laser.
I had to run away.  I hid in the bushes.
When  I looked around, the robot was coming after me.
But he lost me so he ran back to where he was standing
and waited for another person to come.

Bottle Experiment

Science Experiment {with a bottle}

We did an experiment with a bottle.

First we observed that the bottle had air inside it.

Next we talked about what would happen once we poured the boiling hot water into the plastic bottle.

Then we poured the hot water into  the plastic bottle and screwed on the lid.

We noticed that as we poured the hot water into the bottle, the bottle slowly lost its shape.

We learnt that the air from the outside of the bottle was pushing more strongly on the outside of the bottle  than the air on the inside.

Pod 7's  Science Investigation

We want to find out how strong air is.
First we inflated four blue balloons.

Next we got a little table and put it upside down on the four blue balloons, with one balloon at each corner.

After that we got some children from our class to stand on the table one by one. We got up to eight children and suddenly two balloons popped.

We found out that air is very strong and four inflated balloons can hold eight children on an upturned table. We also learnt that air can push on you.

RJ's Wonderful Writing - The Crash

The lights from the ambulance  lit up. Suddenly there was a big crash. I looked up. All the cars driving past the ambulance braked.
The car  crumpled. On  the motorway some cars piled up. the wheels skidded and screeched. There were Injuries on people everyone was looking the windows were smashed and the bumper was taken off.  The car slammed into the wall and smashed. It was foggy. The people from the ambulance hopped out. They checked if the man was OK.
The oil was pouring out. It was greasy. All the cars were beeping at the ambulance.

Heaps of big trucks were going past. The person was scared and confused. The wheels of the smashed car were popped. The other lights from the cars was shining. One of the  wheels rolled off the  car.  It was windy. The person was cold in the wind. We had to stop and when  the sign said “go” we drove past. They moved the car onto the truck  and while they were moving  the car the ambulance drove off and the person went to hospital.

Mr Brown's Visit

Today Mr Brown from Kamo Intermediate came to Pod7 / our class to talk to us about being a flight attendant.

We learnt that there is a big inflatable slide at the door of the plane.
We also learnt that there are all kinds of jobs such as: keeping people safe, serving food and drinks, checking that passengers seat belts are on, and lastly all places on board are spotless.

We learnt where the flight attendants slept, and what part of the plane they sleep in.
He also told us where the exits and engines are.

Mr Brown answered all our questions, and also showed us some photos of where he had travelled over the past years.
As you get higher the oxygen level in the atmosphere goes down.
And if you put a glass of water outside it turns to ice instantly.

WACKY   HAIR  DAY

Check out our wacky hair!
We brought a gold coin donation to help raise funds for our
school wetland project.
It was fun to see all the creative hairstyles!

W
Pod 7's Flight Inquiry Study

For our inquiry about flight, we first did a class brainstorm, where we shared all the words we knew about flight.

We then took all the different words and sorted  them into different categories.
This was quite tricky, because some words could fit into more than one category.

We then had to decide on a heading for each category, which was our Key Concept.

Our key concepts were:

Creatures that fly
Mechanical flying machines
Objects that float in the air
Space Flight
Features of aircraft
Elements of Nature that affect flight
Flight personnel
Features of an airport
Commercial Airlines
Fantasy Fliers (mythical creatures)

Next we learnt about how to ask effective questions to help us learn more about what we wanted to find out.

Here are some of the interesting questions that
we would like to know the answers to:

How is flying a plane different to driving a car?
What are jet engines made of, and how do they work?
How do planes fly?
What are some of the important things that a pilot needs to do when they fly a plane?
How do you control a hang glider?
How does helium help things to float in the air?
What are some of the earliest flying creatures?
How many people were on a space shuttle crew, and what jobs did they do?
What was the first plane like?
Who was the first person to fly in NZ, and where?
Who were the first people to accomplish powered flight?
When were the first fighter planes used, and what kind were they?
How does a big jet airliner start?
What are some of the different jobs that flight attendants do on domestic and international flights?

We talked about the different ways that we can find answers to these questions. Broadening our horizons to learn the "Google" is NOT the only way, has been new learning for many of us.

So far, we have found out that asking people who do these jobs can help us to learn more, because we can ask them more questions when we are face to face.
We have also discovered that photographs, newspaper articles and even songs can help us to learn more.

We are looking forward to sharing some of our findings with you via our blog.
Also, if you know of anyone who could help us with our study, please contact us, in Pod 7.

ANZAC  HAIKU

As part of our ANZAC study, we learnt how to write haiku.
They are 3 lined poems which have a 5-7-5 pattern of syllables

The first line has 5 syllables
The second line has 7 syllables
The  third line has 5 syllables

We had to think very carefully to keep our messages short and powerful.
What do you think of our efforts?

ANZAC  Poppy   Art

We used charcoal and pastels on our artwork of ANZAC  poppies. They have made an effective display in Pod 7

We have been practising our new school karakia every morning.

Here is a copy for you to practise at home.

Morning Karakia

Kia hora,  te marino
May peace  be widespread
Kia whakapapa, pounamu te moana
May the sea be like greenstone
Hei huarahi, ma tatou, i te rangi nei
A pathway for us all this day
Aroha atu, aroha mai
Give love,    receive love
Tatou i a,  tatou katoa
let us show respect  for each other
